It was like any other night of the week for us. We had eaten our family dinner and we were all piled into our little RV bed watching an episode of a show we enjoy as a family together.

There was nothing extraordinary, just a moment of revelation as I sat there watching 3 grown men try and wrestle a $10,000 Tuna Fish from the water.

The teams of fishermen had been trying, in vain, for days to catch a fish. In fact, the whole show had been about the dry spell. Except for this ONE team. This team had a can’t lose streak that was baffling. We watched in wonder as the pulled in fish after fish. They became the envy of the fleet.

I began to ponder their success wondering what in the world was different about them compared to the other fishermen. They all used the same bait, same rods, same hooks, same line. Everything was the SAME…

You see that’s how it happens with the Holy Spirit sometimes. He will speak to us in the most unexpected and surprising ways. He likes to bust into our day with his revelations because he is our friend, and that is what friends DO!

Do you want to know what my friend, Jesus, showed me at that moment?

It was all about the words these men were speaking. As I began to watch more closely, I realized what He was saying.

While every other fishing boat was saying things like

  • I just can’t get a bite today.
  • What we are doing isn’t working.
  • We are not as lucky as their boat
  • There’s nothing happening today
  • It’s a bad day for fishing

The other guy (the one with all the fish) was saying things like:

  • Any minute now a big one will come by
  • We are going to get so many bites today
  • We have all the secrets for good fishing
  • Today is a great day for fishing
  • We are going to get so much action today

I began to notice this theme… episode after episode. This guy, who has no relationship with Jesus that I could see, was using a biblical principle to speak wealth and prosperity over himself.

Why Your Words Matter

We have all been there. We are frustrated, we are expressing our disappointment and words start flying out. It’s amazing how easily we can start saying things that are, unknowingly, damaging us (or others around us).

Let’s look at what the bible says …

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18:21 (NASB)

The Lord has given us clear instructions that we will eat the fruit of what we speak. We will either live or die by what we allow ou of our mouths over our lives.

Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.

Mark 11:23 (NASB)

When I finally started really going after this truth in my life, a lot of things changed for me. I read this book… which is amazing and I highly recommend it.

It helped me to start speaking life and not death. It helped me to write declarations over my life and to start speaking the truth over myself. We have already seen some amazing changes in my life!
