Why You Should Pray The Lord’s Prayer Daily

Any time in scripture that the Lord tells us to do something, it is important. Wouldn’t you agree? What if God not only told you what to do but How to do it. This is where it becomes even more important to follow the instructions.

God never gives us anything more than we can handle. Which may leave you feeling like you really wished God didn’t think so much of you sometimes… am I right?

But, He is always faithful to provide the tools we need for life and godliness. One of the best tools that I have found for increasing my faith and connection with Him is, the Lord’s Prayer.

Beginners Guide to Praying The Lord's Prayer

What is The Lord’s Prayer?

The Lord’s prayer can be found in the Bible at Matthew 6:9-13.

Matthew 6:9-13 New International Version (NIV)
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

What a profound moment in history. The God of all creation has taken the time to tell us the formula for prayer that gets answered.

Contrary to most christians beliefs, this is not some simple suggestion. God has given you the KEY for powerful prayer in this passage. He is telling you, I want to hear you. I want to answer you. This is how to bypass yourself and get to me in prayer faster.

How to get started Praying The Lord’s Prayer

This is something my husband has been doing for YEARS. It wasn’t until I really heard him praying one day and realized that he had added some stuff to the prayer that I got intrigued.

*note: you can certainly just pray the Lord’s prayer, just as Jesus did, and it is obviously very powerful. We added a few specific things to our prayer and we have a free download for you so you can do the same if you like.

Now when my husband prays the Lord’s prayer each day he basically uses it as an outline in his spiritual life to make sure to hit all the points of the prayer.

Let’s go point by point shall we?

Tips for Success in Praying the Lord’s Prayer

When I was younger in the Lord and trying to find some sort of connection point with prayer, which was hard for me in all honesty.

I needed someone to break it down for me. I felt nervous to pray out loud in a group setting. Insecurity would plague me… what if I said the wrong thing.

It was only after asking a friend “How can I be powerful in prayer?” that I got my answer. She simply said “Pray like Jesus. It worked for him…” 😉

After many years of only praying the words of Jesus I heard my husband praying more in depth and I realized… I can expand on it. This is FORMULA for powerful prayer.

Step 1: Begin with Honor

Jesus began the Lord’s prayer “Our father who is in heaven Hallowed be your name”. He was acknowledging his father in heaven first. I imagine the the first words in the Lord’s prayer mean (in my own words) “God of heaven, I honor your name as holy”

  • Hallowed means “revered as holy”
  • You are establishing HIS authority and our submission to Him as God.

Step 2: Establish His Authority

“Your kingdom come, Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven” is where things get interesting. Ask the Lord to have his kingdom come to specific places in your life. Andrew spends the longest time in this section and names his family and friends by name here. It is such a rhythm for him now that he can remember all the names easily and flows right through a list of about 30 people. My suggestion? Start with 10 😉

  • Work
  • School
  • Family
  • Government
  • Church

Step 3: Seek his Provision

“Give us today our daily bread” is more than a prayer for provision. It is a prayer for nourishment. Do not just think of “daily Bread” as you physical needs but your spiritual ones as well. He wants to provide for, and care for you in all of your needs. God already knows what your needs are but its good to out them in words. Here are some additions you can make here.

  • Nourish me spiritually in the area of… (helping me grow in faith, teaching me to love more, giving me more patience etc…)
  • Provide for me financially by… (giving me a better job, helping me pay off my debts, giving me freedom from fear of job loss, etc…)
  • Help me to be content in your presence and seek you more. Relying on you as the source of my supply.

Step 4: Ask for his Forgiveness

“And forgive us our debts as we forgiven our debtors”. In some translations this section says forgive us our trespasses, meaning sin. Now we know that Jesus, once you have asked him into your life, has made you free of sin and spotless. You are righteous and complete through his sacrifice. So what does this really mean? How can we ask for forgiveness if we are already right with God?

My opinion on this is that it is actually asking God to teach you how to forgive OTHERS (and maybe yourself, too?).

At this point, I ask the Lord each day “Show me who I need to release forgiveness to.” I wait a few moments and he will show me someone. When I sense the person in my heart that needs forgiveness from me, I say

“I forgive [person’s name] of any wrong doing to me. I bless them and their family in the name of Jesus” At first this list was really long and it took a while to get through.

The older I get, the more practice I get doing this as things happen to me and the less I have to spend time here.

“Someone once said that unforgiveness was like a poison you drink while hoping for someone else to die.”
― Jennifer Heng

Step 5: Ask for His Guidance

“Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one” this is a great place to ask for wisdom each morning. Imagine, God wants to give us all the tools we need to be successful and make good choices. All we need to do is ask. We use the sentences below to ask for help in this area.

  • I ask you to organize and schedule my day for your Glory.
  • Give me wisdom and guidance in the areas of…
  • Help me to focus on … today.
