Ever been in the dead of winter and just dreaming of visiting a Florida Keys Resort? Me too… When we started full time RV living we realized that one of the major benefits is being able to pick up and go where ever you like. We decided it was time for us to exercise our freedom of location. So we picked some place warm and sunny for October 2018. A little back story on this deal, in August 2018 we signed up for an awesome camping membership called Thousand Trails.
About The Thousand Trails Camping Pass
We bought our pass for $499 for a year and we opted to add on the Encore pass for $199. This add on gave us access to more than 100 additional campgrounds (some of which are Florida Keys resorts), but some of the Encore resorts cost an additional $20 a night. Now we can book a stay at one of their Thousand Trails campgrounds for up to 4 nights and then we can move right to another thousand trails camp ground OR we can stay for up to 14 nights and then we have to move out of thousand trails system for 7 days.
Why Use Thousand Trails?
Well, mainly because we have saved SOOO much money using our thousand trails pass since we go it. We ended up buying multiple zones so we get to move around throughout all of Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Texas, and tons of other places. It makes moving around as a Full time RV family much easier to manage and much more budget friendly. One of the best parts about using Thousand Trails is that the campgrounds are pretty much all full hook up (which means water, sewer, and electric are all included).
So, back to how we got to the Florida Keys… We booked into it in September and found an awesome spot at the beautiful Sunshine Key RV Resort in Big Pine Key, Florida. Thankfully, we were able to get a spot there and we only spent $20 a night because of our membership.
Florida Keys Resort Review ( ie. 10 things We Love About Sunshine Key RV Resort)
1. The Drive to the Keys
This was our first time to the keys and when we finally got onto the small grouping of Florida island, we were shocked. It is just as beautiful as the Bahamas, without the fuss of passports and mandatory plane or boat rides. We enjoyed some of the most beautiful scenery on our easy drive down to the Florida Keys resort we were staying at!
2. The Staff
You would be hard pressed to find a nicer and more genuinely friendly group of people than the staff at Sunshine Key RV Resort! The staff is very well organized and always friendly. We even had the pleasure of meeting someone who was from our area of NC who now lives in an RV full time as well!
3. The Sunrises
The sunrises in the Florida Keys are simply stunning. The fiery and unobstructed views are really worth getting up a few minutes early to experience. I actually started getting up at 6 am while we were in the Keys and it has done me a world of good. I am progressively working my may up to 5 am but we all have to start somewhere… am I right
This was my first experience kayaking. It was so amazing and we had such a great time. Sunshine key RV resort Provided the kayaks at no cost as part of their grand reopening bash that they had while we were there. Capt. Brian was amazing and gave us great clear instructionAnd even took our picture for us so that we could have proof that I actually got in the water!
5. The Manatees
Can you say bucket list? This was for sure the highlight of our trip!We were able to encounter wild manatees multiple times in the Marina there Earlier in the morning and in the mid evening.Well it’s not the safest place for them to hang out,They often like to be around sources of freshwaterSo unfortunately they hang out right in the Marina. The good news is, most of the voters know that they are there and are conscious to make sure that they keep the manatees safe as they’re pulling in and out.
6. The Pool
If you have never been to Florida, let me tell you it’s hot!A mid afternoon swim each day was just the perfect thing for us as a family. At about 12:30 or 1 o’clock we would leave the super hot RV(Because we have a tiny 30 amp AC unit) and Head down to the crystal clear waters at the pool.It was always just the right temperature and super refreshing.
7. The Amenities
Something you may not know about many RV parks is that they’re not always the cleanest places in the world. Sunshine key RV is definitely one of the nicest we have stayed at. They had perfectly clean laundry facilities, basketball and volleyball courts a beautiful marina and of course the pool facilities. We also enjoyed and used the free the book and movies rentals. Everything was brand new and super clean due to a hurricane that came through last year. They have completely renovated every last part of the park!
8. The Proximity to Key West Florida
At only an hour and half drive from the Sunshine Key RV resort Key West was the perfect day trip. We enjoyed the southern most point, Hemmingway’s home and museum, and even the best key lime pie in the world! It was super fun and we had a great time walking around and exploring the historical, Spanish influenced, architecture.
9. The Fishing Dock
One of the first things that my husband did when he got to the Florida Keys resort, was purchase a $30 fishing license. And let me tell you, he put that thing to good use. He went out each morning and each evening to catch some fish with our daughter. He even got the additional Lobster fishing license so he can go snorkeling and find lobster around the keys. I would say he probably caught at least $100 worth of lobster so the fishing license was money well spent.
10. The Memories We Made
Being that this was our first trip to the keys, it was a huge success. We already have plans to come back as a family next year. The mild winter temperatures, beautiful sunsets, and amazing food make this the perfect spot to come and relax as a family. Don’t have an RV? Good news, they rent RVs on site at Sunshine Key RV Resort so you can absolutely come and enjoy the super affordable rates for yourself.
